An Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon is a Dental specialist specifically trained to treat diseases of the facial skeleton, jaws, mouth, soft tissue, teeth, and related structures. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are especially skilled to address the problems associated with missing teeth and to place dental implants.

A formal Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery residency education involves a minimum of four years of training and experience after dental school in the fields of general anesthesia, internal medicine, general surgery, neurosurgery, head and neck surgery, oral pathology, radiology, plastic surgery, and general oral surgery. Some programs send their residents overseas to enrich their experience and broaden their scope of expertise. In addition, a number of oral and maxillofacial surgery residency programs integrate a full medical education and an MD degree with a postgraduate surgical internship year.
